Abstract

Background: Kick speed is an important component of taekwondo performance, particularly in the execution of dollyo chagi, a kicking technique frequently used in competition. This study aimed to analyze the effect of ankle weight training on improving dollyo chagi kick speed among taekwondo athletes at Sibayak Club Medan. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach was employed. The sample consisted of 30 taekwondo athletes aged 15–22 years selected using total sampling. The intervention involved ankle weight training conducted twice a week for four weeks. Kick speed was measured using a stopwatch before and after the intervention. The results showed a descriptive improvement in kick speed after ankle weight training. Before the intervention, 27 athletes were categorized as moderate and 3 athletes as poor. After the intervention, all athletes were categorized as very good. The mean kick time also decreased from approximately 4.70 seconds in the pre-test to approximately 3.06 seconds in the post-test. These findings indicate that ankle weight training may serve as a practical training variation to improve dollyo chagi kick speed. However, conclusions regarding statistical significance should be confirmed using the complete inferential statistical output.
