Penyuluhan tentang Penggunaan Obat Antibiotik di Poli Gigi RSUP H. Adam Malik Medan

Abstract

Oral and dental health is a vital component of overall health that directly affects chewing function, speech, and quality of life. One important aspect of dental healthcare services is the appropriate and rational use of antibiotics. The use of antibiotics without proper indications or non-adherence to prescribed instructions poses a high risk of contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge, awareness, and adherence of patients and their families regarding antibiotic use at the Dental Clinic of H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan. The activity was conducted on April 9, 2025, involving 30 patients and family members. The implementation methods included promotive and preventive education through interactive lectures, distribution of leaflets and posters, group discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and evaluation of participants' knowledge using pretests and posttests. The results showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge regarding antibiotic indications, proper use, dosage adherence, and the risks of antibiotic resistance. Direct education in the service waiting area proved effective in creating interactive two-way communication. This activity is expected to serve as a sustainable educational program to support the rational use of medicines in healthcare facilities.
